The roles and functions of a library, historical development of libraries in India and abroad, Model Public Library Act, five laws of Library Science, philosophy of librarianship, features of information and knowledge society, knowledge economy, ALA, IFLA, ILA, IASLIC, OCLC, and other prominent library associations in India and across the globe are explained in this subject.

Knowledge Organization: Classification (Theory)

The species of library classification, dynamic and descriptive theory of classification, CC i.e. Colon Classification, UDC i.e. Universal Decimal Classification, DDC i.e. Dewey Decimal Classification, and basic concepts like folksonomy, social bookmarking and tagging, etc. are covered here.

Knowledge Organization: Cataloguing (Theory)

Different forms of library catalogue including physical forms and conventional and non-conventional forms are included in it. It also sheds light on RDA, CCF, and some other latest cataloguing trends. Normative principles of cataloguing, simplified and centralized cataloguing, etc. are also described in it.

Knowledge Organization: Classification and Cataloguing (Practical)

Classification of documents according to DDC, Classification of documents according to CC, Anglo American cataloguing rules, and classify catalogue code are the main contents of this subject.

The concepts like children library, types of children and their needs, story books and their types, wordless books, summer reading programs, etc. are included in this subject.

Public Library System

It gives an introduction to the Public Library System and provides information regarding acquisition and selection of books, classification and processing of books, routine services, etc.

Management of Library and Information Centre

It deals with the functions and rules of management and teaches principles of scientific management and their real life application in libraries and information centre. Library authority, its delegation, organisational structure of library, library planning, financial management and reporting, management of human resources in library, library statistics and annual report, library rules and regulations, etc. are some important concepts included in it.

Basics of Information and Communication Technology

Fundamentals of Information and Technology, scope and definition of ICT, functional units of computer, CPU, storage units, introduction to open office operating, etc. are some key concepts covered in this subject. It also sheds light on computer networks and communication, internet, Android operating system, Library Automation, digital library, and other related topics.

Information Sources and Services

Reference and information sources, primary, secondary, and tertiary information sources, information services and products, information seeking behaviour, impact of social media on library services and digital information literacy, etc. are the key concepts that are included in this subject.

Soft Skills for Library Professionals

It includes various topics related to reading, writing, and speaking skills. It also focuses on development of telephone skills, group discussion and presentation skills, time management skills, etc.

The students learn how to draft a document and write technical articles, journals, and other forms of writing in this subject.

 

Eligibility for Distance B.Lib.sc Course?

All candidates who hold a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a minimum of 50% to 60% in their overall grades are eligible for the BLib course. It should be noted, nonetheless, that the eligibility requirements may change based on the university to which an applicant is applying.
